What are manual sequence stages?
Several customers and prospects have asked about other types of sequence stages that aren’t necessarily related to messaging prospects. There’s lots of precedent for this in comparable products already, like Outreach and SalesLoft (sales automation software), which is often how customers are familiar with this concept.
Just like with InMail sequence stages, manual sequence stages create a placeholder task for the Gem user to take action on at a scheduled time. Instead of doing that action for you automatically, Gem surfaces a reminder (email notification) and a to-do in Gem (on your “Todo” page).
We’ve introduced 3 manual stage types, so in addition to email (automated) and InMail (manual) sequence stages, we now also support:
- Phone Calls
- Text Messages
- LinkedIn Connection Requests
What do I need to know?
Most notably, 3 things have changed:
- Sequence wizard
- To Do page has been overhauled
- Gem extension now lets you take action on these 3 new types of manual tasks, instead of only allowing you to copy-paste InMails.
Sequence wizard
Now, when creating or editing a sequence, you can select these 3 new stage types in addition to email and InMail.
To Do page
- You can now skip over manual stages to proceed to the next stage
- Todo page now has tabs, with 3 sections (refer to the screenshots below)
- Outreach - Users go here to send their manual stage messages
- Check reply - Users go here to confirm that an automatic stage should send (i.e. safety mechanism to ensure that no conversation took place after previous manual message was sent)
- Reminder - Shows the previous table view of the reminders that have been set in Gem
- Note fields for manual stages: remind yourself what to do in that stage (e.g. if sending a text message, pre-write the messaging)
- “Start” button opens first Todo and candidate sidebar
Gem Extension
- All todos are actionable from the Todos page as well as in the Gem extension
- “Check Reply Todos” now show last manual stage outreach type and time
FAQ
Can a customer create their own stage types?
Not yet, but maybe in the future!
With automatic SMS stages coming soon, will that replace these manual SMS tasks?
No - there are some legitimate reasons to keep both workflows. If it turns out no one wants manual SMS stage anymore after we’ve launched automatic SMS stages, we can look into sunsetting them.
Why can’t we automatically take action on the “Send****LinkedIn Connection” stage type?
Someday we may be able to but for now it’s against LinkedIn’s terms of service, which is the same reason we don’t automatically send InMail either.
