Functional Overview
- Reply tracking in Gem works only with InMail sent through LinkedIn Recruiter. This reply tracking functionality relies on InMail email notifications, and email notifications about InMail received on the consumer version of LinkedIn unfortunately don’t include the message content.
- When you receive an email notification from LinkedIn about an InMail you’ve received, Gem tries to match that incoming message to a person in their Gem instance based on the InMail subject and the sender’s name, since that’s the only information we have from the email notification. We will log this only if we find a unique match to a Gem candidate (otherwise fallback to manual checking for reply)
- The message content will be logged and can be viewed in the person’s Gem Activity Feed
- The message will be counted in Outreach Stats (as an “InMail” reply touchpoint)
- If the person was in an ongoing active sequence, that sequence will be stopped
- Like regular email sequences, Gem Bot will auto-reply to the received InMail email notification with links to View in Gem, and links to quickly mark the candidate’s replies as Interested/Not interested/Follow-up later.
How do I set up InMail tracking?
To take advantage of automated InMail tracking, you must send InMails via a valid Linkedin Recruiter license.
Users must also have created a Gem account (but installing the Chrome Extension is not strictly necessary) before following the instructions below to activate reply tracking.
Ensure your primary email address on LinkedIn is the same email you havefor Gem:
You can verify your Gem user email at the bottom of your Gem left navigation.
Head over to https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/email:
- Verify your primary email address matches the email address used on Gem
Head to: https://www.linkedin.com/psettings/communications-controls/email
- Click Conversations
- Make sure InMails you have received is set to Individually on Email frequency
Once you’ve followed the above steps, Gem will automatically start tracking replies to any InMails you’ve sent through LinkedIn Recruiter, and log those replies to the appropriate person in Gem.
What types of InMails are tracked?
Only replies to InMails first sent through LinkedIn Recruiter (includes the new InMail Composer). Gem users have to first send an InMail to a person through LinkedIn Recruiter in order for Gem to log any subsequent replies. Only replies going forward after the launch of this functionality will be logged. InMails received via the consumer version of LinkedIn or Sales Navigator cannot be logged in Gem.
How are InMail replies counted in analytics?
In Outreach Stats → breakdown by “Outreach Type” will include automatically-logged InMail replies in the “replied” column.
How does Gem know which profile to log the InMail reply to?
Gem matches incoming InMails to a profile in Gem based on the InMail subject line and the person’s name.
Does Gem log all historic InMails received from people in Gem?
No - reply tracking applies only going forward, after this functionality has launched.
When might a replynotbe logged to Gemautomatically?
Likely because there are multiple profile matches in Gem, and we don’t know which person to log the message to.
Will automaticsequencestages(suchas email or SMS)following InMail stages send automatically if no InMail replies are detected?
No - there’s a chance that a user receives an InMail reply that Gem couldn’t automatically log (due to above reason), so Gem will still surface a to-do to check for InMail replies before moving to the next stage for that person.
Can Gem automatically send InMails for me?
Unfortunately, no. Sending InMails is still a manual action that users need to complete, but we automatically log outbound InMails in Gem so you don’t have to “mark as complete” (in the case of InMail sequence stages) or manually mark a touchpoint in the Gem extension.
