- IT recommends updating your computer regularly as software updates generally include things like security patches for active exploits, performance improvements, application compatibility and overall improved performance.
- With major releases ie. (Upgrading from MacOS 12.xx to MacOS 13.xx) IT alongside of some engineering partners will generally perform tests to ensure there are fewer issues before announcing and pushing to the rest of the company fleet.
Q: How do I ensure my computer remains updated.
Option A: Best way is to navigate to the apple icon (top left menubar) and click “system settings/system preference). – Navigate or search for”General” –> Software Update.
If there are any pending updates they will appear after a few minutes. (You can press CMD+R also to refresh).
Go ahead and run the update and it’ll download in the background and prepare to install. During this period take the time to make sure any important work is saved and prepare to quit all applications.
Once the installer is finished you’ll see a 60 second countdown before your computer restarts.

Option B: You’ll see a prompt in your computer’s menubar from Kandji. Kandji is our MDM that pushes important updates and application updates from the IT team that keeps your computer current.

After the update is done downloading you’ll see another countdown to install the MacOS update. Please take the time to ensure any important work is saved while the update takes place.
How long does the update take?
A. Each download varies depending on the size of the installer. Typically a major update can take about 30-45 minutes (ie. updating from 12.x.x to 13.x.x) however smaller software updates are much shorter and can take as little as 7-10 minutes
