(Internal) How to reset a Gem's Macbook password

Prerequisites:

Need to have access to Kandji to retrieve FileVault Key

Occasionally a Gem will forget their computer password. These steps are to reset their computer password by providing them the FileVault 2 key which is stored and encrypted in Kandji.

  1. Navigate to https://gem.kandji.io/
  2. Look up the device serial #
  3. Hit the 3 dots in the top right and select “View FileVault 2 recovery key”
  4. Provide the key to the employee and offer them the following instructions if they don’t know how to access the reset.

Hi [EMPLOYEE], Here are instructions on how to reset your computer password.

  1. Restart/boot up your laptop while holding down the power-up/Touch ID button.
  2. After a minute you should see a prompt appear under the apple logo that says “Continue with startup Options” (you can release the power button at this point).
  3. After a few moments there should be a gear-wheel icon that says “Options.” Select that.
  4. This should boot up into the MacOS Recovery Screen.
  5. Select “forgot all passwords”.
  6. Input the FileVault key provided in this email.
  7. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions to reset your laptop password.
