Overview
This article answers common questions about GeMCP setup, access, permissions, supported use cases, and troubleshooting.
GeMCP is Gem's implementation of the Model Context Protocol. It allows supported AI assistants and developer tools to connect to Gem through governed tools, using the permissions and product access already associated with your Gem user.
Requirements
To use GeMCP, you need:
- A Gem account.
- Access to an AI assistant or developer tool that supports MCP.
- Permission from your organization to connect that tool to Gem data.
- Access in Gem to the records, analytics, dashboards, or objects you want to ask about.
Review supported GeMCP use cases
GeMCP can help you ask questions about supported Gem data in plain language. Common use cases include:
- Candidate and profile summaries
- Interview feedback summaries
- Pipeline and role status summaries
- Recruiting analytics and trend questions
- Sourcing and outreach performance questions
- Weekly digests or leadership-ready summaries
Some write actions may also be supported where enabled, such as adding notes or working with supported dashboard objects. Available tools may change over time.
Understand GeMCP data access
GeMCP follows your existing Gem permissions. If your user cannot access a record or report in Gem, GeMCP should not expose it through your AI assistant.
GeMCP also follows product access. For example, analytics or dashboard-style questions may depend on whether your organization and user have access to the relevant Gem product features.
Choose an AI assistant
GeMCP is designed to work with AI assistants and tools that support MCP connectors. Setup steps may vary by tool.
The most common setup path is through Claude connectors. Developer tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor may also support MCP configuration.
Add GeMCP to Claude Team or Enterprise
Claude Team or Enterprise workspaces may require an Owner or Primary Owner to add a connector at the organization level before individual members can connect. After the connector is added, each user still needs to connect and authenticate their own Gem account.
Confirm the connected Gem account
GeMCP connects to the Gem account you authenticate during setup. If you use multiple Gem instances, make sure you are logged in to the right account before connecting.
If you connected the wrong account:
- Disconnect the GeMCP connector from your AI assistant.
- Log in to the correct Gem account.
- Reconnect the GeMCP connector.
- Start a new conversation before asking questions about sensitive or customer data.
After you reconnect, GeMCP uses the Gem account and permissions from your new authentication session.
Troubleshoot missing data
GeMCP may return less data than expected if:
- Your Gem user does not have permission to access that data.
- Your organization does not have access to the product feature that powers that data.
- The request is too broad or ambiguous.
- The specific workflow is not supported by the current tool list.
Try narrowing the question to a specific candidate, role, Project, team, or date range.
Troubleshoot slow responses
Simple lookups are usually faster than broad, cross-object analysis. Larger reporting or trend questions can take longer because the assistant may need to inspect more data and reason across multiple objects.
If a response is slow, try:
- Asking about one role, Project, or time period.
- Requesting a summary before asking for a chart or table.
- Breaking a complex question into multiple smaller questions.
Troubleshoot prompts
If a prompt does not work:
- Confirm the Gem connector is enabled in the conversation.
- Confirm you are connected to the correct Gem account.
- Rephrase the prompt with a specific role, candidate, Project, or date range.
- Check whether your Gem user has access to the data.
- Contact your Gem Customer Success Manager or Gem Support if the issue continues.
Use supported write actions
GeMCP currently supports limited write actions where those tools are enabled and where your user has permission. Do not assume every Gem action is available through MCP. You can query GeMCP to see the most current list of write tools available.
