Overview
Navigation in Gem is getting a new look, emphasizing simplicity and consistency when navigating around Gem. We’re constantly gathering and acting upon feedback from Gem customers, and these changes are in response to an increased focus on simplicity and ease of navigation, which we’ve addressed by ensuring that the Gem experience is consistent across all of our different product areas.
This article explores what’s changing as part of this redesign, and how to move around Gem using the new navigation options.
Note that we’re taking a phased approach to turning on the navigation updates, opening them up to customers over a period of time. If you’ve come across this article and you can’t see the redesigned navigation, don’t worry - it will become available to you in time, and we’ll let you know when that’s happening.
Requirements
- The redesigned navigation is available to all Gem users.
What’s changing in Gem?
We’re making three main updates as part of this redesign:
- Label changes: We’re updating the names of a few categories (which we’ll refer to later as menu items) to bring them in line with how they’re actually used, and match how your team talks about them.
- Main sidebar: We’re consolidating the main sidebar (i.e. the left-hand navigation menu) to now show up to eight menu items (depending on your team’s package), which you can select to view the full navigation menu for that category.
- Page headers: Every page will now use the same header layout for things like page titles, actions, and filters, so once you learn one page you’ve learned them all.
All this, and nothing has gone away - nothing’s changing in terms of how Gem functionally works, or how you’ve configured your saved views, filters, or reporting.
For a video walkthrough of these changes, check out 2026 Navigation TLDR (4 min). It covers all three of the main updates: label changes, the main sidebar, and page headers.
Label changes
We’re making a few changes to how categories are named, and how they display as menu items in the main sidebar.
- Talent Compass is now Reporting.
- Talent Marketing is now Marketing.
- ATS (for Gem ATS users) is now Jobs.
- Candidates (for Gem ATS users) or Talent Pipeline (for non-Gem ATS users) is now Pipeline.
- People and Outreach are now combined into one category: Sourcing.
The full list of menu items you’ll see will depend on your team’s package, or the type of ATS that you use. Here’s a breakdown of all available menu items though, showing each one’s previous name and new name.

How to use the main sidebar
By default the main sidebar is minimized, and shows up as a slim bar along the left-hand side of your screen displaying a series of icons.

- Hover your cursor over any part of the sidebar and it expands to show the top level of menu items.
- Next, hover your cursor over any menu item (except Home, Tasks, or Pipeline, which don’t have any secondary items) to expand the menu and show all available secondary menu items.

- Select any menu item to go to that page.
If a menu item has child pages/secondary menu items, when you’re on any page within that category you’ll see an Expand icon at the top-left of the screen, between the minimized sidebar and the name of the page.
Hover your cursor over this icon to see a tooltip confirming its function.
Select Expand to open the secondary menu.

The secondary menu remains expanded (even if you move between pages) until you select the Collapse icon.

If you have access to the Templates page and/or Admin settings, these will display towards the bottom of the main sidebar, above your name.
Updated page headers
To help with consistency, we’ve updated the page headers across the board so that every page uses the same elements (where available), and each element is located in the same place. These include:
- Global elements that are available on every page
- Local elements that are available on certain pages
- Navigation breadcrumbs
- Dashboard/report switching
- Consistent dropdowns
Global elements
The Search and Notifications icons are available on every page in Gem. These are now always visible in the top-right corner of the screen.

Local elements
There are some elements which are only available on certain pages, such as the Share icon and the Actions menu (the three dots). Where these apply, they now appear in the same places: the Share icon in the top-right corner next to Search and Notifications, and the Actions menu directly beneath the Notifications icon.

Where an Actions dropdown is visible on a page, this appears in the same location as the Actions menu would.
Navigation breadcrumbs
On some pages, selecting an item (such as a job, or a dashboard) takes you to a new page - as opposed to displaying a pop-up. Anywhere that this happens, you can now navigate back to the preceding page using the breadcrumbs at the top-left of the page (next to the Expand/Collapse icon).
In the example below, select Dashboards to return to the main Dashboards page.

Switch between dashboards/reports
When switching between reports (In Outreach Stats, Pipeline Analytics, or Talent Pipeline) or dashboards, once you have opened one report/dashboard you can easily swap to another using a consistent element at the top of the page.
For dashboards and individual reports, use the Switch report (⏷) dropdown at the top of the page.

If you’re on pages like Pipeline Analytics or Outreach Stats, you can navigate to specific reports using the Reports dropdown at the top of the page.

Dropdowns
On pages with clickable headers that allow you to set the scope of what’s shown - for example choosing between All Projects/My Projects/Favorited/Shared with me/Archived on the Projects page - these headers have been changed to standard dropdowns located next to the filter dropdowns.

Will my saved views, filters, or bookmarks still work?
Yes. These updates change the look and organization of navigation and page headers, but the underlying data remains the same. Any views, filters, bookmarks etc. that you’ve previously set up will all remain unchanged.
What if I don’t want to use the new navigation?
We recognise that this might not be the ideal time for your team to be getting used to Gem’s new look. As such, individual users can temporarily disable the new navigation for their own instance of Gem - this will keep them using the existing navigation for up to 30 days.
To disable/enable the new navigation, follow these steps:
- Select your account at the bottom of the main sidebar.
- Select the New navigation option to toggle it on or off.
